This online guide will lead you through a nine step process and provide additional resources to support the development of performance assessment tasks that enhance student learning. To assist educators in writing their own performance assessment task a ClarisWorks 4.0 and a Microsoft Word word processed template is available for download. Throughout this online guide there is a section labeled "
Put into Practice." At this section readers will be prompt to switch to the word processed file and complete the particular step before moving to the next step.

Please select one of the following:

  • ClarisWorks 4.0 Template

  • Microsoft Word Template
    | download word file |

    Special Note:

    To view, edit and print clarisworks files you will need ClarisWorks 4.0 or higher.
    To view, edit and print word files you will need Microsoft Word.

Once the file is downloaded, go to your Desktop and locate the file named "PAT." If you have downloaded the Microsoft Word template double-click on the PAT file. However, if you have downloaded the ClarisWorks file, first open or activate ClarisWorks Word Processing. Once the program is activated go to the File menu and select the Open command. Find the PAT file on your desktop and open.

To move back and forth from your Internet browser (e.g., Netscape or Internet Explorer) to the word processed template view the following.

Macintosh Finder MenuMacintosh Users
Go to the Finder Menu (located in the top right hand corner of your screen) and select the desired application.


Windows Users
Windows Taskbar
Go to the Taskbar at the bottom of your screen and click on the desired application.
