Selecting a Complex Reasoning Skill

Determine how the task will be designed so that it is meaningful and engaging (e.g., embedded in a meaningful context, intellectually stimulating and challenging, interesting opportunity for student expression, etc.).

Use the following questions to stimulate your thinking.

Comparing
Could it be useful to show how things are alike or different?

Classifying
Could it be helpful to group things in different ways?

Abstracting
Could abstract patterns be applied elsewhere?

Inductive Reasoning
Are there important unstated conclusions that could be generated from specific information?

Deductive Reasoning
Are there generalizations (or principles or rules) that could be applied to reach conclusions and/or make predictions?

Constructing Support
Is there a position or claim to defend/support or refute?

Error Analysis
Could errors in thinking and reasoning be examined?

Analyzing Perspectives
Are there viewpoints related to a topic or issue that could be explored?

Decision Making
Are there important decisions to make?

Problem Solving
Is there a situation with an obstacle, constraint, or limiting condition to overcome?

Invention
Could a new product or process improve something? Could a product or process be improved upon? Could something better be created?

Experimental Inquiry
Is there an unexplained phenomenon for which an explanation can be generated and tested?
Essential Questions

  • What are the basic thinking skills and processes for all learners?
Note: In choosing a complex reasoning skill refer to a locally developed list or a set developed by a nationally recognized group (i.e., Marzano, R., Pickering, D., and McTighe, J. Assessing Student Outcomes:  Performance Assessment Using the Dimensions of Learning Model, ASCD)

  • Which thinking skills/processes will be emphasized to encourage the thoughtful application of knowledge and skills related to the standard/benchmarks identified in Step 1?

  • What are two or three possible ideas for tasks that could be developed into PATs?
